Homework Starts Here: Is Your Home Ready for Back to School?

A new school year means new schedules, more connected devices, and more time spent online at home. Students may be completing assignments, attending virtual meetings, watching educational videos, or researching projects while other family members are streaming, gaming, or working online. All of that activity can place additional demand on your home internet connection.

Before homework begins, take a few minutes to make sure your home is ready:

  • Consider how many devices are connected. Phones, tablets, computers, televisions, gaming systems, security cameras, and smart home devices all share your internet connection. Even devices that are not actively being used may remain connected in the background.
  • Check your router placement. Your router should be placed in an open, central location whenever possible. Walls, furniture, appliances, and enclosed cabinets can weaken the Wi-Fi signal in different parts of your home.
  • Restart your equipment. Restarting your modem and router can clear temporary connection issues and give the equipment a fresh start. It is a simple step that can often improve performance.
  • Test the areas used for homework. Make sure the internet connection works well where students will complete assignments. If possible, set up a designated homework space before the first busy school night.
  • Review your current internet package. A plan that previously met your household’s needs may not be the best fit when more people and devices are online at the same time. If your household’s internet use has changed, it may be time to review your available options.
